Hugh is an archaeologist specialising in medieval and early modern England, with a particular interest in monastic and ecclesiastical archaeology. He has worked for the last twenty years as an academic at The University of Sheffield, has conducted a number of notable excavations and published widely in the field.

Hugh is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists.

He is currently Chair of the Society for Church Archaeology.
